Coin of Goal and Experience

Hanya sebuah cerita kecil yang sederhana. Semoga 'moral of the story' nya bisa nancep dan menjadi sebuah perenungan.... Tujuankah yang lebih penting atau Perjalanan itu sendiri?

Coin of Goal and Experience
One day, Two good friends, Tom & Ben were walking in front of a huge apple garden. The land lord was standing at the gate and shouted to them, “hi boys, we have the biggest harvest ever! you are invited to come in and look around. And you may bring home as many apples as you can pick. You have one hour, just walk ahead till you reach the exit gate, enjoy your time!” Tom was very excited, he took a big sack and start picking the ripe apples. He tried to pick as many as he could. Although the sack became very heavy and full, he tried to get an extra pack. He thought that, “I have to move quicker, so I can bring more apples home. So when dragging two big pack of apples passing the gate door one hour later, he was very exhausted, almost out of breath.
Then he saw Ben came out with a big smile and looked very happy although he only carried a small bag of apples. Ben said, “Tom, I yelled to call you, but you didn’t hear me. I’d like to ask you seeing around with me. Don’t you agree that it's a wonderful garden? The view was so beautiful, isn’t it?’” Tom was speechless, He didn’t see any view except the apple trees and the ripe apples he focused on. Tom continued, “do you remember the land lord? he is a very kind old man. I met him in the middle of the garden, we sat down under a tree, he told me some funny stories and we laughed together. I also learn a lot from him about apples, and before I left, he gave me a bag of apples that he said it has the sweetest and the best quality. Tom was fascinated with Ben’s story. But he was so sad because he had no nice experience to share except the apples he was too tired to eat. He has missed a wonderful trip through the garden that he supposed to have.

Fellow toastmaster, some of the time, in living our life, we are just acting like Tom. We are focusing to much on the goal then we forgot the experience we may have in reaching the goal. When we were asked, “what is our goal in this life?” I think most of us will say ,”it is happiness..”, won’t we? And usually people identify happiness with money or wealthy life. Sometimes we work so hard in achieving this goal, and the other side of our life coin was ignored.

My niece was very disappointed because her daddy didn’t watch her ballet performance she’s been dream of. Her daddy didn’t come to the show because he thought that dinner with his client was more important, who knows there’s any business opportunity. Setting a goal or target and stick to it, is important, but it’s not everything. Have your beloved ones became a part of your goals? Do they have the same target with you? Your son’s target could be only listening a story telling from you before he went to bed. Who want to be a rich old man/woman when we get old? I think all of us want to be. But who want to be a rich but very lonely old man/woman, because you has no good relationship with you children? So, it’s important to keep the balance of the coin.

What is your goal of joining Toastmaster? To Accomplish the projects one by one and be a CC? One of our fellow told me that she wanted to take a break from toastmaster because she thought that she didn’t make any progress on her speech. She said she had no time even to prepare a speech. I said to her, “I think you have to set a target, prepare and deliver a speech every 2 months for example. But the most important thing is, please do not think that you made no improvement.” I saw that she always actively participate in our meetings and contributed a lot to the club. I believe that there must be a personal growth. To complete the projects is important but the experience you may gain from each meeting will build your personal improvements.

Fellow toastmaster, on every step you make, keep balancing the coin of goal and the way to achieve it. Because that’s the experience in achieving the goal, gives you the color of your life. That’s the true arts of Life. Thank you…
